Read MoreEach Sunday GNFK volunteers prepare hot meals for the residents of Vancouver’s downtown eastside. Guru Nanak’s Free Kitchen has been providing this service for a number of years now and lineup’s start before we arrive and usually remain for a few hours.
The event preparation takes place at two Gurdwara (Sikh Temples) in the Lower Mainland, due to the availability of commercial cooking space and storage space for GNFK supplies. The first two Sundays of each month this event is staged from Gurdwara Sukh Sagar, 347 Wood Street in New Westminster BC. The last two Sundays of the month, the event preparation moves across the Fraser River to Guru Nanak Gurdwara on Scott Road in Surrey BC.
Once our volunteers prepare the Langar (Sikh communal vegetarian meal), we load up the GNFK Truck with the meal, juice, tea and sweets or fruit as donated by volunteers and head downtown. Between 1pm and 1:30pm each Sunday the meals arrive downtown and setup starts with the serving of the meals commencing around 1.30pm. About 10 volunteers line help serve meals each week and serving takes place until around 4pm, at which stage the volunteers head back to the Gurdwara to cleanup and count inventory for the next GNFK event.
